Help Us Build a New School for Kavre!
The Kavre Dwarpaleswor Lower Secondary School, located in Naya Gaun (aka. “New Village”), Village District 9, Kavre, Nepal, was dangerously shaken in the devastating earthquake of April 25, 2015, leaving the existing buildings badly damaged and unsafe for the students. No one takes education for granted, but especially not these kids: every day, children walk up to 90 minutes to and from the school just to get to classes.
Our mission: build 2 new buildings with 8 classrooms that are SAFE, SUSTAINABLE, COMFORTABLE, & INSPIRING.
Phase 1 of the project includes demolishing 3 damaged buildings on the site, and erecting 2 new buildings with 8 classrooms and an office space. We’re committed to building something better than what was there before, so we’re utilizing sustainable site strategies and locally-sourced rammed earth as a building material.
- Large windows for daylighting & cross-ventilation
- Deep overhangs for shading
- Outdoor classroom space to take advantage of exterior setting
- Heavy earth walls to retain heat in winter and coolness in summer
Instead of prefab structures that rely on imported materials, we are using earth from the surrounding site! It’s a method that’s both sensitive to the environment and harmonizes with the surrounding landscape.
WHAT IT'S GOING TO TAKE
- 1700 bags of cement (to mix w/ earth)
- 5 tons of rebar/metal reinforcement
- 4500 SF of roofing
- 4200 SF of insulation for interior partitions
- 5 tons of structural steel
- 60 windows
- 9 doors
In order to cover the costs of materials and skilled labor, we need to raise $90,000. And with your help, we know we can do it. In fact, thanks to a number of initial donations, we’re already 10% of the way there!
